Peter Obi Joins Nnewi Diocese For Priests’ Burial, Visits Released Archbishop

Former governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, yesterday attended the burial of three revered priests of the Nnewi Diocese, including Rev. Fr. Tobias Okonkwo, Msgr. Donatus Ebubechukwu Ike, and Msgr. Prof. Christopher Ejizu. The solemn ceremony drew clergy and faithful from across the diocese, as they paid their final respects to the late priests.

Speaking at the event, Obi lamented the tragic death of Rev. Fr. Tobias Okonkwo, who was killed by criminal elements, describing it as a stark reminder of Nigeria’s growing insecurity. Fr. Okonkwo, who served as the Manager of the College of Nursing Sciences at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala, was celebrated for his passion for advancing nursing education and healthcare. Obi, a consistent supporter of the institution, recounted his October 2024 meeting with Fr. Okonkwo, highlighting his dedication to humanity and the health sector.

Obi extended his condolences to the Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Jonas Benson Okoye, and the entire diocese, praying for strength to bear the loss. He called for collective efforts to address the insecurity plaguing the nation, ensuring such senseless deaths become a thing of the past.

Additionally, Obi visited retired Archbishop Godwin Okpala of the Anglican Communion, who was recently released after enduring three weeks in captivity. Expressing relief at seeing the Archbishop in high spirits, Obi commended his resilience and reiterated the urgent need for decisive action against insecurity. He emphasized that with unified leadership and collective resolve, Nigeria can overcome its challenges and secure a brighter future.
