Peter Obi Donates ₦20 Million, Consoles Niger State Over Devastating Floods

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has paid a condolence visit to Niger State following the devastating flood disaster that struck the Mokwa area, leaving a trail of death and destruction.

During the visit on Tuesday, Obi expressed deep sympathy with the government and people of the state over the tragedy, which has claimed over 200 lives, left about 1,000 people missing, and displaced more than 3,000 residents. Homes and farmlands were also destroyed in the wake of the disaster, prompting national concern.

Obi, who was accompanied by Senator Nenadi Usman and Dr. Yunusa Tanko, was warmly received by the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Yakubu Garba. While in the UK a day earlier, Obi had called the state governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, to express his condolences.

Speaking during the visit, Obi emphasized the need for national solidarity and compassion in the face of such disasters, stating that incidents like these affect every Nigerian and require collective action.

“As a family, we must come together to care, comfort, and support one another in times of grief and difficulty,” Obi said.

In a gesture of support, the former Anambra State governor donated ₦20 million to aid the state government’s ongoing relief efforts and pledged to continue offering support as the situation evolves.

He also called on the Federal Government, emergency agencies, and well-meaning Nigerians to join in providing assistance to the flood-ravaged communities.

Obi commended the swift response of the state government and local teams, praising their courage and resilience amid the overwhelming crisis.

“I pray that God comforts the families of those who have lost loved ones, protects those still missing, and grants healing and strength to all affected,” he added. “May Niger State find peace and restoration.”
