Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has lauded the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for accepting responsibility over the recent technical glitches that affected the results of 379,997 candidates in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), but cautioned against the growing trend of system failures in public institutions, warning that such glitches must not be allowed to become a national crisis.

Obi made this known in a statement titled “Let’s Not Make Glitches Become a National Crisis”, in response to the press briefing by JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, who had openly admitted to the technical shortcomings and expressed deep regret over the inconvenience caused to candidates and their families.

Describing Prof. Oloyede’s rare show of accountability as commendable, Obi noted that while JAMB’s swift response was appreciated, the incident sheds light on a deeper, systemic problem — the fragility and unreliability of critical national institutions.

“The emotional and psychological toll on students and parents — with reports of trauma and even death — is a stark reminder of what is at stake. The integrity of our examination processes and public institutions is foundational to national development,” Obi stated.

He stressed the need for JAMB and other critical agencies to implement robust quality assurance systems, including rigorous testing, regular audits of technological platforms, and transparent communication strategies.

“There must be no room for further glitches — not in JAMB, not in any arm of government. The cost of repeated failure is simply too high,” he warned.

Reaffirming his vision for a better nation, Obi concluded with his signature optimism: “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
