Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has joined Nigerians in celebrating mothers on this year’s Mother’s Day, acknowledging their sacrifices, resilience, and immense contributions to society.
In a statement, Obi described mothers as the backbone of families and society, emphasizing their role in nurturing children, shaping morals, and instilling values that strengthen communities and the nation. He noted that Mother’s Day is an opportunity to appreciate their unwavering support and commitment to family and national development.
Beyond celebration, Obi highlighted the struggles many Nigerian mothers face, including poverty, hunger, and inadequate healthcare. He referenced the 2023 UN Report on Trends in Maternal Mortality (2000-2020), which revealed that nearly 28.5% of global maternal deaths occur in Nigeria, with a staggering 1 in 19 lifetime risk of maternal mortality for Nigerian women, compared to 1 in 4,900 in developed nations.
“These are direct consequences of neglecting critical sectors like health, education, and poverty alleviation,” Obi stated, stressing the need for urgent investment in maternal healthcare and policies that support women.
He urged leaders to prioritize initiatives that protect and empower mothers, reaffirming his belief in a New Nigeria where women receive the recognition and support they deserve.
