In commemoration of the International Day of Education, Mr. Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and a strong advocate of education, spent yesterday visiting schools in the state, including Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS), Onitsha, Community Primary School, Mmiata Anam, and Our Lady of Lourdes Secondary School, Mmiata Anam, in Anambra West Local Government Area.
Speaking at the events, Mr. Obi emphasized the transformative power of education in fostering development and innovation. He described education as a key driver of sustainable development, highlighting its role in unlocking the nation’s potential.
At DMGS Onitsha, Mr. Obi joined in celebrating the school’s centenary anniversary, commending its remarkable contributions to education in Nigeria. He celebrated some of the school’s distinguished alumni, including Prof. Kenneth Dike, Africa’s first Black Vice-Chancellor; Emmanuel Ifeajuna, the first African to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal; and other notable figures such as Prof. James Ezeilo, Prof. Ilochi Okafor, and Chief Simon Okeke. Addressing the students, he urged them to emulate these role models, emphasizing the importance of hard work and dedication in achieving greatness.
In Mmiata Anam, a community close to his heart, Mr. Obi reflected on his commitment to the area during his tenure as governor, particularly the construction of a bridge and road to connect the once-isolated community to the rest of the state. Visiting Community Primary School and Our Lady of Lourdes Secondary School, he interacted with students and staff, reinforcing the importance of education and pledging further support for the schools.
Mr. Obi also used the occasion to reflect on Nigeria’s challenges in the education sector, citing poor funding, outdated curricula, insecurity, and a lack of qualified teachers as critical issues requiring urgent government attention. He noted that countries like India, China, Morocco, and Egypt have demonstrated how strategic investments in education can drive national progress, urging Nigeria to follow suit.
He concluded by calling for a collective commitment to prioritizing education, stating, “A New Nigeria is possible if we invest in education and unlock our nation’s full potential.”
The celebration underscored Mr. Obi’s enduring commitment to education as a tool for transforming lives and building a better Nigeria.
