Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for a transparent and inclusive approach to the proposed Tax Reform Bill, emphasizing the importance of public trust and engagement in achieving effective governance. Obi made this known in a statement highlighting the critical role of deliberation and legitimacy in the policy-making process.
Describing tax reform as a “critical issue,” Obi stressed that while the pursuit of such reforms is necessary, it must be subject to “robust and informed public debate.” He underscored the need for public hearings to provide a platform for Nigerians from diverse backgrounds to express their views and contribute to shaping the reform.
“A public hearing on tax reform is essential, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully. This is how we build public trust and ensure inclusivity in policymaking,” Obi stated.
He further cautioned against rushing the process, emphasizing that matters of such magnitude require careful deliberation to ensure sustainability and inclusivity. “When considering tax reforms, it is insufficient to focus solely on the benefits to the government, particularly in terms of increasing revenue collection. We must also take into account the overall impact on the nation and the sustainability of all its regions,” he added.
Obi also called on the government to sensitize the public and secure their support for any policy changes, reiterating that trust and legitimacy are vital for the success of reforms. “Without these foundations, even the best-intended reforms may fail,” he noted.
He urged policymakers to prioritize transparency, public engagement, and deliberation in charting the path forward, asserting that this approach would strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process and foster a participatory governance model.
Concluding his statement with optimism, Obi affirmed, “A new Nigeria is possible!”
The Tax Reform Bill has been a subject of debate in recent weeks, with stakeholders calling for more inclusive consultations to address concerns about its impact on citizens and businesses. Obi’s comments are expected to further stimulate discussions on the need for an equitable and sustainable tax system.
