In a press briefing at the Operational Headquarters of the Nigeria Customs Service Oyo/Osun Area Command, Customs Area Controller Dr. Ben Oramalugo announced significant milestones in revenue generation and anti-smuggling efforts from April 17 to June 13, 2024.
Dr. Oramalugo reported that the Oyo/Osun Area Command generated a total of ₦6,335,842,600.28 in May 2024 alone. Cumulatively, the Command has amassed ₦30,664,247,939.15 in revenue from January to May 2024. This marks a 5.2% increase compared to the ₦29,154,853,722.73 collected during the same period in 2023. “This increase is a testament to the dedication and efficiency of our officers in ensuring compliance and maximizing revenue collection,” stated Dr. Oramalugo.
Despite these achievements, the Command faces a formidable challenge in meeting its revenue target of ₦141,682,012,396.84 for the year. Dr. Oramalugo emphasized the importance of continued efforts to educate stakeholders on customs regulations, resulting in improved compliance and a reduction in under-declarations. The integration of advanced technology through the Nigeria Customs Service Modernization Project has also streamlined processes, enhancing transparency and revenue collection.
In addition to revenue generation, the Oyo/Osun Area Command has maintained a robust stance against smuggling activities. From April 17 to June 13, the Command intercepted and seized numerous contraband items, including 546 wraps and 33 sacks of Cannabis Sativa valued at ₦21,128,260. These items were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Oyo State Command. Additionally, approvals have been granted for the auction of seized Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) due to its inflammable nature.
Dr. Oramalugo reassured stakeholders of the Command’s commitment to combating smuggling, emphasizing its grave implications for national security, economic stability, and public health. “Through collaboration with relevant stakeholders, intelligence-driven operations, and enhanced surveillance along our borders, we will continue to demonstrate exemplary professionalism,” he said.
In conclusion, Dr. Oramalugo expressed gratitude to the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, sister security agencies, and other stakeholders for their continued support. He also commended the officers and men of the Oyo/Osun Area Command for their dedication and professionalism amidst challenging circumstances.
As the Command navigates the complexities of the current economic landscape, Dr. Oramalugo assured stakeholders that the Oyo/Osun Area Command remains steadfast in its commitment to fulfilling its mandate under the Nigeria Customs Service Act. “We will continue to adapt and innovate, ensuring that our operations remain effective in the face of evolving challenges,” he concluded.
