Despite a torrential downpour in Lagos on Thursday morning, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, proceeded with his scheduled inspection tour of two pivotal institutions recently integrated into his ministry. The institutions visited were the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) and the Liaison Office of the Department of Fishery and Aquaculture, which houses the College of Fishery.

The tour commenced at NIOMR, where the institute’s Chief Executive, Prof. Abiodun Sule, showcased some of their strategic breakthroughs, including the unveiling of various fish species found in Nigerian waters. Minister Oyetola emphasized the importance of mapping out the country’s marine resources, stressing the need to ascertain the quantities and types of marine life available. He urged the staff to intensify their efforts to address the rising cost of fish feeds in Nigeria, reiterating his goal to boost local fish production and reduce dependency on imports.

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Oloruntola Olufemi; Director of Maritime Safety and Security, Babatunde Bombata; and the Executive Director of Engineering and Technical Services, Engr. Ibrahim Umar, who represented the MD of NPA, Minister Oyetola proceeded to the Department of Fishery and Aquaculture. There, the delegation inspected the laboratory facilities and emphasized maintaining high standards of monitoring and inspection to prevent Nigerian exporters from being blacklisted internationally and to ensure that imported fish meet the required standards.

Minister Oyetola assured the staff of both institutions of his commitment to their welfare and encouraged them to enhance their capacity and productivity. He expressed his vision for the fishing sector to contribute significantly to job creation and increased federal revenue.

The staff, motivated by the Minister’s visit, pledged their commitment to his vision and the overarching mission for the maritime sector, vowing to uphold the standards and expectations set forth.
