Oyetola Commemorates Day Of The Seafarer, Emphasizes Seafarers’ Critical Role In Maritime Industry

In a keynote address during the commemoration of the 2024 Day of the Seafarer, Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, described seafarers as the lifeblood of the maritime industry, essential to the success of the Blue Economy. He emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to developing the Nigerian maritime sector, aligning with the theme, “Navigating the Future, Safety First.”

Represented by Mr. Babatunde Bombata, Director of Maritime Safety and Security, Oyetola assured stakeholders of continuous collaboration to advocate for the rights and welfare of Nigerian seafarers. He highlighted the importance of comprehensive training programs and stringent safety regulations to ensure Nigerian seafarers are among the best trained globally.

Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), echoed the Minister’s sentiments, acknowledging the challenges faced by seafarers and the need for a greater focus on their well-being and safety. Mobereola noted Nigeria’s potential as a maritime powerhouse and emphasized the agency’s commitment to addressing global issues affecting seafarers through local and international collaboration.

The event saw various stakeholders, including members of the National Assembly and international representatives, praising the contributions of seafarers to the global economy. They called for continued support through favorable policies in line with the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006.

The International Day of the Seafarer, celebrated annually on June 25, recognizes the vital contributions of seafarers to international trade and the world economy, organized by the International Maritime Organization and recognized by the United Nations.
