OWERRI – The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit Zone “C” (FOUC), has announced a significant haul of contraband valued at approximately N7.58 billion, captured between January 25, 2023, and April 19, 2024. The outgoing Comptroller, Kayode Kolade, revealed these figures during his departure ceremony, as he passed leadership to the newly appointed Comptroller, Michael Ugbagu.
Comptroller Kolade, who served from early 2023, expressed his gratitude towards the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, and his team for their trust during his tenure. He praised the efforts and dedication of the FOUC officers whose hard work facilitated numerous significant seizures. These included illegal drugs, endangered wildlife products, and various prohibited items.
The disclosed seizures comprised 198 different confiscations: 413.1kg of pangolin scales, over 1,800 bags of foreign rice, large quantities of cannabis, numerous vehicles including three armored ones, explosive materials, and a vast array of expired and unregistered medicaments.
Additionally, under Comptroller Kolade’s administration, the FOUC was not just about law enforcement but also community and officer welfare. Initiatives such as the construction of a health clinic and the establishment of a sports office with gym facilities were highlighted as key achievements.
In his incoming speech, Comptroller Michael Ugbagu thanked his predecessor for setting a high standard and reiterated his commitment to continue the diligent enforcement of customs laws, using intelligence and technological advancements to battle smuggling and duty evasion.
The change in command calls for continued and enhanced efforts to secure Nigeria’s economic interests against illegal trade practices, as emphasized by both the departing and the incoming comptrollers. The public and media’s support has been solicited to ensure the ongoing success of the FOUC’s mission.
