The tragic death of Adetunji Opayele, popularly known as Teejay, has sparked widespread outrage, with calls for justice growing louder across Nigeria. The Co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Bumpa lost his life on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, after being hit by a car along Ozumba Mbadiwe, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Teejay, a promising software engineer, was returning home from the gym on his power bike when a vehicle, reportedly driven by Biola Adams-Odutayo, merged onto the expressway without checking for oncoming traffic. The impact left him unconscious on the road.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described the driver’s actions as inhumane, alleging that she refused to step out of her vehicle to check on Teejay and showed no willingness to help. Bystanders pleaded with her for assistance, but she reportedly remained on a phone call for over 30 minutes while the victim lay critically injured.

Despite the efforts of good Samaritans to get him medical attention, two hospitals refused to admit him. He was eventually taken to another facility, but by then, it was too late—he was declared dead shortly after arrival.

What has fueled public anger is the perceived leniency of the legal response. Adams-Odutayo was arrested and later released on bail after being charged only with reckless driving. Teejay’s family, friends, and supporters argue that she should face manslaughter charges, as her negligence contributed to his death.

Following the incident, Teejay’s loved ones and members of the tech and entrepreneurial communities have taken to social media, demanding justice. Their key demands include proof that Adams-Odutayo is still in Lagos and has not fled, a proper manslaughter charge instead of the lesser offence of reckless driving, intervention by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to prevent any cover-up, assurance from the Inspector General of Police and Lagos State Commissioner of Police that due process will be followed, and support from Osun State political representatives, as Teejay was a native of the state.

The campaign for justice has gained traction, with calls for anyone who witnessed the accident or has relevant evidence to come forward. Teejay’s family has vowed to pursue the case relentlessly, insisting that his life cannot be reduced to a mere traffic violation.

With mounting public pressure, all eyes are now on the authorities to ensure that justice is served.
