The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Adewale Adeniyi has launched a new tactical initiative, Operation Whirlwind, aimed at curbing the smuggling of petroleum products to neighboring countries. The inauguration took place on Thursday at the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College (NCCSC) in Abuja.

In his opening remarks, CGC Adeniyi underscored the pivotal role of the Operation Whirlwind team in safeguarding Nigeria’s economy from the detrimental effects of petroleum smuggling. “Economic saboteurs must be brought to justice,” he asserted. “Our service has seen significant improvements in revenue and performance, but our impact on the Nigerian economy must be more pronounced.”

The workshop is designed to equip the Operation Whirlwind team with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively combat smuggling activities, especially the illicit diversion of petroleum products. CGC Adeniyi emphasized that this new initiative is intelligence-driven and not merely a task force or checkpoint operation. “This operation will support the political will at the highest level. Our dedication and loyalty must not be compromised, and any act of sabotage will face severe consequences.”

Adeniyi also highlighted the importance of teamwork and collaboration among the selected officers, who were chosen for their proven capabilities. “Your coordinator’s record is impeccable, and your mission’s success depends on your ability to work as a cohesive unit. You are here to support the existing structure, not to compete, but to fight against those undermining our efforts.”

The workshop will include a session by the Director of Legal Services, focusing on proper procedures for filing seizures, ensuring that all legal aspects of the operation are meticulously handled.

The launch of Operation Whirlwind represents a significant stride in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against smuggling and economic sabotage. As the team gears up for their mission, CGC Adeniyi has set clear expectations: to protect Nigeria’s economic interests with unwavering dedication and integrity.
