OKIJA STAMPEDE: Anambra CP Visits Victims, Condoles Families

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has expressed deep regret over the tragic stampede in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, which claimed 22 lives and left several others injured.

During a visit to the hospital on December 22, 2024, where the injured victims are receiving treatment, CP Itam extended his condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery.

The stampede, which occurred on December 21, 2024, has left the community in mourning, prompting the Police Command to intensify investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents. The statement emphasized the Command’s dedication to crime prevention, rapid response to emergencies, and the protection of vulnerable populations.

“The Police Command remains steadfast in fostering a sense of security and community among Ndi Anambra,” the statement read.

The tragic event has drawn widespread attention, highlighting the need for enhanced safety measures during public gatherings to prevent future occurrences. Meanwhile, the community continues to mourn the lives lost in the unfortunate incident.
