Haiti was recently struck by an earthquake. It reminds us of the brutalities od nature the country has continued to suffer, especially the earthquake of 2010.
After the earthquake of 2010, Mr. Peter Obi travelled to the country as an aid worker. Together with his son, they slept in one of the camps that littered the country. He took time touring damaged public buildings and other institutions. This was contained in a press statement by the Spokesperson of Mr. Peter Obi, Mr Valentine Obienyem.
Back to Nigeria, in addition to personal donation towards the re-building of the country, he helped to raise money from wealthy individuals and companies.
In 2012, he was back to the country and made several donations towards the re-building efforts. Apart from the contributions towards rebuilding some public buildings, he also donated 200 Million Dollars for the rebuilding of the country’s Cathedral.
At that time some people tried to link Obi’s effort as a “Thank You”, gesture for the part Haiti played during the civil war – recognition of Biafra. Without affirming or denying the speculation, I had stated that it was purely a gesture in solidarity with our common humanity. Nigeria also showed sufficient concern by sending contingents of her police to help restore peace to a country her devastation verged on anarchy.
