NUJ President Advocates Media-Civil Society Partnership During CISLAC Visit

The President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr. Alhassan Yahaya, has called for stronger collaboration between the media and civil society to bolster democracy and governance in Nigeria. This appeal was made during his visit to the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) Headquarters in Abuja, where discussions centered on deepening partnerships to enhance accountability and good governance.

During the meeting, CISLAC’s Executive Director, Comrade Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, emphasized the shared responsibility of the media and civil society as societal watchdogs. He highlighted challenges such as shrinking civic spaces and the persecution of critics at subnational levels. Rafsanjani also stressed the need to mobilize local resources for effective advocacy, promote citizen participation in governance, and combat corruption. He underscored the media’s pivotal role in fostering transparency, describing it as inseparable from civil society efforts.

Mr. Yahaya shared his experience as a journalist and advocate, recounting a notable success in securing a budget line for nutrition in Gombe State through a CISLAC subgrant. He praised the enduring synergy between the media and civil society, urging CISLAC to involve the NUJ in capacity-building initiatives for journalists nationwide. Reflecting on his efforts to professionalize journalism in Gombe, Yahaya encouraged passion and commitment to impactful reporting.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to collaboration in addressing national issues, strengthening democratic institutions, and advancing the principles of accountability and good governance.
