NUJ Lagos Council Urges Press Protection, Calls For Review of BRT Fare, Intervention In Assembly Crisis

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos State Council has issued a communiqué following its congress on February 22, 2025, addressing critical issues affecting journalists and the state.

The congress reaffirmed its commitment to protecting journalists from harassment and called for stronger unity among members. It urged the council to support members facing health challenges and ensure *The Guardian* Chapel is involved in the Abaren Land project.

Members were encouraged to embrace digital opportunities, while the council congratulated newly elected NUJ national executives, reminding them of their campaign promises.

Expressing concern over the ongoing crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly, the congress warned that unresolved conflicts could hinder state development. It appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene urgently.

The congress also called on the Lagos State government to review the recent 18% increase in Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) fares due to prevailing economic hardships. Additionally, it urged swift action to curb the growing menace of street urchins and miscreants under bridges across the state.

The communiqué was signed by NUJ Lagos State Council Secretary, Tunde Olalere, with contributions from the Communiqué Drafting Committee members Babajide Okeowo, Yewande Balogun, and Dapo Udom.
