Nteje Community Advocates For Inclusivity, Freedom of Expression on Social Platforms

The Nteje community has recently raised concerns about inclusivity and freedom of expression on WhatsApp platforms created to facilitate dialogue among its members. In a statement released by Dr. Emma Ezeagbo, a prominent community member and former Police Admin of the NDU WhatsApp forum, he emphasized the need for fair and democratic conversations where all voices, including dissenting ones, are heard.

Dr. Ezeagbo highlighted his tenure as a forum administrator, where he prioritized adherence to rules, freedom of expression, and engagement with members before taking any action against posts or individuals. He stressed that Nteje belongs to everyone, not a select few, and urged the need for platforms to reflect this collective ownership.

However, recent deviations from these principles have been observed on the NDU WhatsApp forum. Reports suggest that members expressing dissenting views, particularly on sensitive issues such as the leadership of Igwe Odegbo, have been silenced or removed without justification. Dr. Ezeagbo criticized these actions, advocating for the deletion of off-topic posts instead of suppressing opposing opinions.

In response to these challenges, new platforms such as the “Nteje Fairness and Freedom Forum” and the “Nteje Democratic Initiative Forum” have been established. These forums aim to provide a space where all members of the Nteje community can freely express their views without fear of censorship.

Dr. Ezeagbo also called for all Nteje WhatsApp groups to adopt and enforce rules that protect the rights and freedoms of every member, in line with the Nigerian constitution’s guarantee of freedom of expression. He urged members who find it difficult to adhere to these rules to voluntarily leave such platforms instead of infringing on others’ rights.

The statement also addressed a recent affidavit filed by the President General (PG) of the Nteje Development Union (NDU), which, according to Dr. Ezeagbo, reflects a lack of consultation with the Nteje community on critical matters. He expressed concerns about the PG’s perceived loss of neutrality, which he believes has contributed to the current discord.

As the community continues to navigate these issues, Dr. Ezeagbo encouraged all members to prioritize unity, mutual respect, and inclusivity. He reiterated that platforms for dialogue should serve as tools for collective progress, not avenues for division or suppression.

The Nteje community is urged to join the newly created forums to foster a culture of fairness, freedom, and mutual understanding in their interactions.
