In a significant breakthrough against oil-related crimes, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Navy, has uncovered a massive illegal artisanal refinery and unauthorized petrol station at Y-Junction, Nkwelle Ezunaka, in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The coordinated operation, which took place on Saturday, May 10, 2025, around 1:45 p.m., was based on credible intelligence regarding suspected illegal dealings in petroleum products within the area. During the raid, the joint security team intercepted and arrested one suspect, while others fled the scene.
Confirming the operation, the State Commandant of NSCDC Anambra Command, Commandant Maku Olatunde, revealed that exhibits recovered from the site included 49 kegs of 25 litres containing suspected adulterated Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), four drums of 200 litres each suspected to be Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), and one pumping machine. The seized items and the suspect have been handed over to the NSCDC for investigation and prosecution.
Commandant Maku reiterated the Command’s unwavering commitment to ridding Anambra State of illegal petroleum activities and commended the Nigerian Army and Navy for their critical support in the successful operation.
“Operators and perpetrators of illegal oil refineries and those hiding under fake identities to engage in petroleum crimes are warned to stay away from Anambra. If they fail to heed this warning, they will be tracked and made to face the full weight of the law,” he declared.
He further stated that the NSCDC remains focused on individuals and groups engaged in criminal activities within the oil, gas, and energy sectors, stressing that the Corps would not relent in taking decisive action against them.
The Commandant assured the public, as well as the collaborating military agencies, that thorough investigations are underway and that the arrested suspect, along with his accomplices who remain at large, will be prosecuted in court.
“This collaboration with sister security agencies demonstrates our united stand against economic sabotage and illegal dealings in petroleum products in Anambra State. As the lead agency in protecting critical national, state, and local government infrastructure, NSCDC is warning all economic saboteurs to steer clear. Our operational mechanisms are active and ready to smoke them out,” Maku concluded.
The statement was issued by SC Okadigbo Edwin, Head of Media and Tactical Operations, on behalf of the State Commandant.
