The Naval Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA) held a special social event tagged “Sister and Spice” on June 2, 2025, at NNS Quorra, Apapa – Lagos, bringing together members for an evening of relaxation, entertainment, and impactful community engagement.
The event, which followed the intensive activities of the Navy Week, was a welcome opportunity for members to unwind and strengthen bonds of unity. Representing the NOWA National President, Mrs. Ijeoma Ogalla, was Mrs. Zainab Akpan, who explained that the program was designed to celebrate sisterhood and reinforce the association’s core values.
“After all the activities of the Navy Week, which have been very cumbersome, it just becomes necessary to entertain ourselves and enjoy the company of one another,” she said. “This program is for women to come together, have fun, and feel good about themselves.”
The event featured a special Movie Hangout with a screening of “Wives on Strike” by acclaimed filmmaker Omoni Oboli, alongside “Sister and Spice,” a production by award-winning movie maker and NOWA member, Mrs. Memuna Yahaya. Her efforts were applauded for powering the entire movie experience and contributing to the success of the day.
In addition to the entertainment, Sister and Spice also featured a Graduation Ceremony for a group of underprivileged children from the Navy Barracks community. The children, trained through a NOWA-led empowerment initiative, received certificates of completion and small grants to help kickstart their journeys toward self-sufficiency.
“Our sister was able to put together some needy children in the society, train them, and they have all graduated today,” Mrs. Akpan stated. “We are also empowering them in the little way we can by offering them some grants.”
She emphasized that the gathering was a reflection of the NOWA spirit—uplifting one another and fostering collective growth. “One of our guiding principles is ‘don’t leave a sister behind’ because we are only as strong as our weakest link. If a sister is down, we’re all down. So, we lift her up and move forward together, no matter the pace.”
NOWA continues to play a vital role in building strong, supportive networks among naval officers’ wives, empowering them to be resilient, confident, and impactful women—true lionesses in their own right.
