In the ever-evolving landscape of modern warfare and maritime defense, the Nigerian Navy has embraced a new perspective that extends beyond traditional security operations.

Recognizing their potential impact on societal well-being, naval forces have ventured into welfare-related projects and charitable ventures, complementing their core mission of safeguarding national waters.

Leading the charge in this paradigm shift is the Naval Officers Wives Association (NOWA), an organization dedicated to service, problem-solving, and promoting social cohesion.

Under the inspiring leadership of Hajiya Nana Aisha Gambo, NOWA has achieved remarkable milestones, aiming to transform the lives of its members and society at large.

Building on over five decades of existence, NOWA continues to uphold its tradition while embracing new opportunities for growth.

The association’s unwavering commitment to social development and community empowerment has resulted in tangible projects and fostered a spirit of collaboration and unity among naval officers’ wives. Through various programs and initiatives, NOWA has made a positive impact on the lives of its members and extended support to communities in need.

Beyond construction projects, Mrs. Gambo, through NOWA, has made significant strides in education, healthcare, and skill acquisition.

The association organizes seminars, workshops, and training programs to equip its members with valuable skills and knowledge, enabling them to become self-reliant and independent.

These efforts have contributed to the personal and professional growth of naval officers’ wives, empowering them to thrive in their respective fields.

NOWA’s commitment to social responsibility extends beyond its own members. The association actively engages in philanthropic activities, reaching out to underprivileged communities and providing essential support. Through medical missions, donation drives, and welfare programs, NOWA demonstrates an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of the less fortunate and leaving an indelible mark on society.

A recent groundbreaking ceremony for the Naval Officers’ Wives Association Events Centre in Abuja signifies a new chapter in NOWA’s journey of empowerment and community development.

The association’s vision of providing a world-class facility to promote social cohesion among its members and beyond is becoming a reality. This endeavour, along with previous achievements like the NOWA International Market in Rivers State, highlights NOWA’s commitment to sustainable development and their dedication to uplifting communities across Nigeria.

Mrs. Gambo, following in her husband’s footsteps, exemplifies a genuine concern for the welfare and well-being of naval personnel. Through effective leadership and community-driven initiatives, she has also commissioned the NOWA Shopping Complex in Navy Barracks Kuje.

Recognizing the significance of commerce in satisfying people’s needs and creating job opportunities, Mrs. Gambo emphasizes its role in enhancing living standards.

NOWA and Aisha Gambo’s vision for naval officers’ wives in the Naval Community Development reflects a forward-thinking approach that recognizes the power of collective action and the potential for positive change. Through their relentless efforts, NOWA continues to inspire and uplift both its members and society at large.

“It is in view of this that governments and private sectors strive to create standard shopping malls and complexes to enhance commerce for sustainable economic growth. This underscores the idea for construction of the Naval Officers’ Wives Association Shopping Complex, Kuje.”

In a remarkable demonstration of foresight and unwavering dedication, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, the Chief of Naval Staff, expresses sincere gratitude to President Hajia Nana Gambo and her committed team for their tireless endeavors in meeting the welfare requirements of naval personnel and their families.

According to him, “through their consistent efforts, the association has successfully organized a variety of social welfare activities, encompassing recreational events, cultural celebrations, and family support programs. These initiatives have not only nurtured a sense of community among naval families but have also provided them with much-needed respite from the demanding and often arduous nature of naval service.”

Among the organization’s notable accomplishments, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo highlighted the ongoing construction of the 200-bed Women and Children Green Smart Hospital, a significant project undertaken by NOWA since June 2022. This endeavor serves as a milestone for the association, reflecting their commitment to the well-being of women and children within the naval community.

The CNS said, “Again, today we are here on 1.9 hectares of land to initiate the construction of NOWA event center at the Admiralty Estate, Asokoro.

“Aside the remarkable sense of foresight in identifying and supporting the welfare initiatives essential for the well-being of naval personnel, Mrs. Gambo has recognize that a strong and cohesive naval force relies not only on its members but also on the support and resilience of their families, NOWA has been instrumental in enhancing the lives of the naval community.”

The leader of the Navy recognizes and appreciates the crucial role that NOWA plays in promoting camaraderie and unity among naval families. The association has consistently dedicated its efforts to create a supportive environment where families can flourish while their loved ones serve the nation at sea. As a result, this has significantly boosted the morale and operational efficiency of naval personnel.
