NNPP Felicitates With Nigerians on Democracy Day, Urges National Unity, Responsible Partnership

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has extended warm felicitations to Nigerians on the occasion of the 2025 Democracy Day celebration, calling for unity, prayers, and collective support for the government to deliver the dividends of democracy.

In a statement signed by the party’s founder, Dr. Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam, the NNPP described this year’s celebration as significant, marking another milestone in Nigeria’s journey of uninterrupted democratic governance.

“Though it is not yet *uhuru*, we acknowledge that tremendous progress has been made. As a nation, we must look beyond elections and political divides once campaigns are over, and unite for the sake of our common interest,” the party stated.

The NNPP called on Nigerians to embrace unity and responsible partnership with the government, urging all lovers of democracy to set aside political differences in the spirit of national development.

The party also decried the spate of insecurity and senseless killings across the country, particularly in Plateau, Benue, Niger, Zamfara, and Borno states, urging the federal government to act decisively to restore peace and safeguard lives and property.

“The president has shown boldness in taking hard decisions, such as the removal of fuel subsidy. In the same way, we believe it is time for him to deploy the full strength of the state’s coercive power to confront the threats posed by insecurity and its sponsors,” the statement read.

On political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, the NNPP cautioned against any attempts to undermine citizens’ rights to free association and political participation, reaffirming that cross-party movements are lawful and do not equate to a one-party system.

“Individuals moving from one party to another does not mean a realignment of parties. Such movements remain within the constitutional right of freedom of association,” the party emphasized.

The NNPP also advised political elites to engage constructively with the government through formal channels rather than media commentary, which it described as unproductive.

Commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for demonstrating leadership, the party noted that Nigerians have high expectations in the fight against insecurity and corruption. It urged citizens to actively partner with the government in building a “new Nigeria of our dreams.”

“The future of our democracy lies in strict adherence to the rule of law. All tiers of government and the people must protect and activate democratic institutions so they can function optimally,” the party concluded.

The statement ended with a call to national reflection, prayer, and a reaffirmation of Nigeria’s collective resolve to deepen democracy and overcome societal challenges.

“Happy Democracy Day,” Dr. Aniebonam added.
