NIWA Warns Public of Sunken Dredger Near Eko Bridge

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has issued a marine safety alert, warning the public about a submerged dredger located near Eko Bridge by the Ebute-Ero jetty in Lagos.

In a notice released by the agency, NIWA described the sunken dredger as a potential threat to both navigational safety and environmental stability. The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, March 29, 2025, and has since posed a significant hazard to river crafts, especially during low tide or in conditions of poor visibility.

The Authority urged fishermen and boat operators to exercise utmost caution while operating in the vicinity. According to the statement, warning signs and safety markers are currently being installed in collaboration with marine safety officials to guide waterway users and prevent accidents.

“Until proper removal or mitigation steps are taken, avoiding the affected area is strongly advised,” the notice stated, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation to prevent further risks.

NIWA assured the public of its commitment to restoring safe navigation in the area promptly and called for collective responsibility in maintaining marine safety.
