The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has installed water buoys along the stretch from Gbajibo in Niger State to Gbajibo-Mundi in Kwara State to improve navigational safety.
In a statement released on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, NIWA announced the deployment of 10 red buoys and six green buoys. These markers are designed to guide water users, indicate safe navigation routes, warn of potential hazards, and highlight protected areas.
According to NIWA, the river along this corridor is generally deep, with a minimum depth of 21.3 meters. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to ensure safer and more efficient water transportation.
The move aligns with the vision of NIWA’s Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, FCIB, who emphasized the importance of safety regulations and improved operational efficiency during the 2025 management retreat.
Suleiman Makama, Assistant General Manager (Corporate Affairs), signed the statement, reaffirming NIWA’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s inland waterways.
