Following the boat accident that occurred on October 7, 2024, at Imore, Lagos, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has arrested the manager of Only God Marine Ltd, the operator of the fibre boat involved in the incident. The mishap, which saw a collision between a fibre boat owned by Only God Ferry and a wooden boat, resulted in injuries and several missing persons.
NIWA’s investigation revealed that the fibre boat veered off its channel due to the obstructed vision of its captain, largely caused by an overloaded vessel. The findings also showed that Only God Ferry failed to comply with operational safety standards and proper navigation procedures.
In response, NIWA arrested the manager of Only God Ferry for negligence and violating the authority’s safety regulations. The move is intended to hold the company accountable and enforce stricter adherence to waterway safety protocols.
NIWA confirmed that legal proceedings are ongoing, and further action may be taken once the company produces the boat’s captain, who may face additional charges.
