In a heartfelt plea, Nigerians are being called upon to extend a helping hand to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Chike Oti, who is currently battling stage 5 renal failure, a life-threatening condition commonly known as end-stage kidney failure. The condition, exacerbated by unmitigated high blood pressure, has left ACP Oti in urgent need of financial assistance to undergo life-saving treatment.
ACP Chike Oti, a distinguished officer known for his professionalism and dedication during his tenure as the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, has touched many lives with his selfless service. His reputation as a detribalized and approachable officer made him a trusted figure among journalists and the public alike. Today, however, he finds himself in a situation where he is the one in need of assistance.
The gravity of ACP Oti’s situation was highlighted by journalist Olusegun Ariyo, who drew inspiration from a column written by Olusegun Adeniyi, Chairman of ThisDay’s Editorial Board. In the column, Adeniyi shared an encounter with a seemingly confused man who, when asked if he needed help, simply responded, “Everybody needs help.” This poignant reminder resonates deeply as ACP Oti now faces a medical crisis that he cannot overcome alone.
ACP Oti has been receiving treatment at Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos, where doctors have recommended that he undergo hemodialysis twice a week. Despite his best efforts to cover the costs out of pocket, the expenses have become overwhelming. The final cost for a kidney transplant is estimated at twenty-five million naira—a sum far beyond his current financial means.
Nigerians from all walks of life are now being called upon to act as their brother’s keeper and support ACP Oti in his time of need. The call is a reminder that everyone, at some point, may require assistance, and that the time to act is now.
