In a significant stride towards reforming policing practices, the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), under the leadership of Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, launched a pivotal two-day workshop aimed at fortifying legal frameworks and operational standards within the force. The workshop, which began yesterday, focuses on enhancing the capabilities of the Legal Department to handle matters sensitively and in accordance with human rights norms.
Addressing the workshop via his representative, Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Alabi Abiodun Sylvester, IGP Egbetokun underscored the workshop’s core aim of instilling a rigorous culture of human rights respect and legal compliance among police officers. The event, held at the Bolton White Hotel in Abuja, marks a collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to bolster the police’s oversight and accountability.
This training initiative, titled “Projects to Strengthen the Oversight and Accountability Mechanisms of the Nigeria Police,” gathers Complaint Response Unit (CRU) officers from various commands, sharpening their skills in transparency and integrity in police operations. The collaboration with UNODC is part of an ongoing effort to ensure that the policing system in Nigeria aligns more closely with international standards of justice and human rights.
IGP Egbetokun expressed his gratitude towards UNODC for their support and partnership, stressing that this program is a critical component of the NPF’s mission to build a trustworthy and law-abiding police force. The initiative not only aims to improve policing standards but also to restore public confidence in the law enforcement system in Nigeria.
