As part of activities marking the 69th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy, the Eastern Fleet opened its doors to the public on Thursday, offering a guided tour of naval ships anchored at the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) VICTORY jetty in Calabar, Cross River State.

The event, which drew enthusiastic members of the public, featured an impressive display of naval assets, including two indigenously built Seaward Defence Boats—NNS ANDONI and NNS OJI—as well as NNS ZUR and NNS EKULU.

Commander of the Eastern Fleet, Rear Admiral KO Oguntuga, warmly received visitors and led them through a tour that highlighted the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to maritime security, national defence, and the growth of the blue economy. Guests were given first-hand insight into the daily lives of naval personnel and the sophisticated operations required to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial waters.

“The Nigerian Navy remains steadfast in its mission to secure the maritime domain for economic prosperity, and events like this help foster mutual understanding between the Navy and the civilian population,” Rear Admiral Oguntuga stated during the tour.

Visitors were thoroughly documented and briefed before boarding, ensuring a safe and informative experience. The Navy Band further enlivened the atmosphere, entertaining attendees with vibrant musical performances.

The open ship tour not only celebrated nearly seven decades of naval service but also offered a unique opportunity for public engagement, allowing civilians to appreciate the vital role the Navy plays in national development and regional maritime stability.

The tour was a resounding success and a key highlight of the Nigerian Navy’s 69th anniversary celebrations.
