Nigerian Navy Moves To Strengthen Engineering, Funding Initiatives

The Nigerian Navy is taking bold steps to strengthen its operational and financial capacities, following a strategic meeting between the Chief of Naval Engineering, Rear Admiral Baratuaipri Iyalla, and the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Saheed Adeshina Akinwande.

During his visit to the Eastern Naval Command headquarters on Friday, April 25, 2025, Rear Admiral Iyalla emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of the Naval Engineering Branch’s deliverables to better align with current operational realities. He pointed out that updating the branch’s requirements is essential to meet the evolving demands of modern naval operations.

In addition, the Rear Admiral stressed the importance of resource optimization, urging the Navy to maximize available funds, explore alternative funding sources through commercial initiatives, and adopt a mindset of doing more with less. He noted that financial flexibility is key to sustaining critical engineering projects and enhancing service delivery across commands.

The meeting also addressed the need for process enhancement, with a call to improve efficiency by refining existing processes, procedures, systems, and standards. According to Rear Admiral Iyalla, strengthening internal operations will result in better resource utilization and higher operational effectiveness.

Recognizing the critical role of human capital, the Navy’s leadership also emphasized capacity development as a major priority. They stressed the importance of investing in training and welfare initiatives for officers and men, ensuring a motivated and highly skilled workforce capable of sustaining the Navy’s excellence.

Rear Admiral Akinwande, in his remarks, identified key areas within the Eastern Naval Command that require development to boost operational efficiency. The meeting, which also involved the Fleet Commander, Eastern Fleet, and the Commander, Fleet Support Group, focused on innovative strategies to expand the Navy’s engineering prowess and resource mobilization efforts.

The visit reflects the Navy’s renewed drive to not only maintain but also elevate its engineering capabilities in a way that aligns with modern naval operations and broader economic realities.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by Sub-Lieutenant Happiness Collins, Acting Command Information Officer, Eastern Naval Command.
