Nigerian Navy Intercepts 1,306 Bags of Smuggled Rice In Lagos During Operation AWATSE

In a sustained effort to curb smuggling and enforce maritime security, the Maritime Component of Operation AWATSE has intercepted 1,306 bags of smuggled foreign parboiled rice in the Majidun area of Ikorodu West Local Government Area, Lagos State.

The operation was led by the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, Commodore Paul Ponfa Nimmyel, who also serves as the Maritime Component Commander for the South-West Operation AWATSE. According to a statement issued on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the seizure took place on Saturday, April 12, during a routine security and anti-smuggling patrol within the maritime task force’s Area of Operations.

Briefing newsmen, Commodore Nimmyel disclosed that the interception followed an attempted evasion by vehicles suspected of smuggling activities. The swift response by the Operation AWATSE Quick Response Team (QRT), acting in line with Joint Task Force Standard Operating Procedures, led to the successful recovery of the contraband items without any casualties.

“The professionalism and restraint exhibited by our team ensured a safe and effective operation,” the Commander stated, emphasizing the Navy’s ongoing commitment to supporting statutory agencies in the fight against smuggling and illegal trade.

In accordance with the Harmonized Standard Procedures on Arrest, Detention and Prosecution, the confiscated 1,306 bags of rice were formally handed over to the Nigeria Customs Service, Western Marine Command, Apapa, on Wednesday.

Operation AWATSE remains a joint military initiative aimed at tackling pipeline vandalism, smuggling, and other criminal activities, particularly in the South-West region of Nigeria.
