The Nigerian Navy, in partnership with the European Union and the French Navy, is set to host the 2024 Symposium of Heads of Navies and Coastguards from Gulf of Guinea countries. The event, themed “Maritime Security and Sustainable Development in the Gulf of Guinea,” will take place from November 26 to 28, 2024, in Abuja.
This high-level symposium aims to address pressing maritime security challenges in the region and foster greater cooperation among Gulf of Guinea nations. It will provide a platform for naval and coast guard practitioners to exchange ideas, strengthen regional coordination, and enhance the implementation of the Yaoundé Code of Conduct, a framework designed to combat maritime crime and ensure safety in the region. Discussions will focus on regional and international cooperation for maritime security, maritime domain awareness and information sharing, and the legal and regulatory frameworks necessary for effective maritime security operations. Representatives from navies and coastguards of Gulf of Guinea countries, alongside international stakeholders, will actively participate in the event.
The Gulf of Guinea is a critical maritime region for global commerce, driving the economies of over 25 Central and West African nations. It accounts for approximately 15% of global oil consumption and 5-6% of global oil production, with proven reserves of about 50-60 billion barrels. The region also facilitates 30% of global maritime traffic, underscoring its pivotal role in the global energy and shipping sectors. Despite its economic significance, the Gulf of Guinea faces persistent maritime security challenges, including piracy, illegal fishing, and smuggling. These threats highlight the urgent need for enhanced regional governance and international partnerships to safeguard its maritime environment.
A key focus of the symposium will be the promotion of multidimensional partnerships to tackle security threats and drive sustainable development in the Gulf of Guinea. By improving maritime domain awareness, information sharing, and the regulatory framework for maritime security operations, the Nigerian Navy and its partners aim to establish a safer and more stable maritime domain. The event underscores the commitment of Gulf of Guinea nations and international stakeholders to securing the region’s waters, protecting vital resources, and ensuring economic stability for the benefit of all.
