On January 22, 2025, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Badagry Quick Response Team of the Nigerian Navy intercepted a fuel smuggling operation at “Only God Jetty” in Farasime, Tongeji Island. Acting on credible intelligence, the team discovered suspected smugglers preparing jerry cans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) for illegal transport to the Benin Republic.
The smugglers, upon sighting the naval personnel, initially attempted resistance but ultimately fled into the surrounding bush due to the determined response of the Navy. According to the Headquarters Western Naval Command, the personnel acted with professionalism, avoiding collateral damage and ensuring the safety of innocent civilians. Contrary to some media reports, there was no exchange of gunfire during the operation.
In a statement signed by the Headquarters Western Naval Command, the Nigerian Navy reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s economic resources and combating illegal activities.
“The actions of these economic saboteurs and their collaborators will not deter the Nigerian Navy from discharging its constitutional mandate of protecting the nation’s economic interests,” the statement read.
The Navy also issued a stern warning to those engaging in fuel smuggling and other unlawful economic activities, promising that they will face the full force of the law when apprehended.
The Nigerian Navy assured law-abiding citizens of its continued protection and encouraged them to go about their lawful activities without fear.
