In commemoration of the International Widows Day, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) WEY has taken significant steps to support widows residing in Navy Barracks and the surrounding Navy Town area in Lagos. This event, established by the United Nations in 2011, aims to recognize and celebrate widows worldwide, highlighting their struggles and extending necessary support.
The NNS WEY, responsible for administering Navy Barracks in the Lagos area, currently supports 197 recognized wives of fallen Nigerian Navy heroes. Acknowledging the challenging conditions faced by these women, the Base has consistently sought opportunities to provide assistance to them and their children.
International Widows Day offers an ideal platform for the Base to extend its support and care, especially in light of the current economic challenges. This year, the Base aims to reach out to 250 widows, including the 197 within the Barracks and an additional 53 women living in the Navy Town environ. This outreach effort is expected to strengthen the already impressive civil-military relations in the Oriade Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos.
The initiative underscores the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to the welfare of its community, ensuring that the families of fallen heroes receive the support they need. By extending their reach beyond the Barracks, the Navy fosters a sense of unity and mutual support within the wider community.
Through these efforts, the Nigerian Navy reaffirms its dedication to supporting widows, acknowledging their resilience, and providing them with the necessary resources to navigate their circumstances. This initiative not only honors the memory of the fallen heroes but also promotes social cohesion and reinforces the Navy’s role as a vital pillar of community support.
