NIGERIAN NAVY AT 69: Western Naval Command Leads Joint Environmental Sanitation In Apapa

As part of activities marking its 69th anniversary, the Nigerian Navy, through the Western Naval Command (WNC), on Saturday, May 24, 2025, led a massive environmental sanitation exercise in Apapa, Lagos State.

The clean-up operation, conducted at Aremu Junction, Trailer Park, and the Marine Bridge axis, was held in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and key stakeholders including the Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), the Lagos State Waste Water Management Office (LAWMO), the Office of Environmental Services, and the Office of Drainage Services.

Speaking at the event, the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Michael Gregory Oamen, described the sanitation exercise as part of the Navy’s civil-military relations strategy. He noted that the initiative aligns with the strategic vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Admiralty Medal, in strengthening community ties and supporting state-led environmental reforms.

“As a key stakeholder in Apapa, the Nigerian Navy is committed to promoting a clean and healthy environment. This exercise reinforces our support for the Lagos State Government’s efforts to ensure that the city remains conducive for commerce and public health,” Rear Admiral Oamen said.

Also present at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Engr. Kunle Rotimi Akodu, commended the Nigerian Navy for championing the cause of environmental sustainability. He noted that the collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment toward improving hygiene and urban cleanliness across the state.

The Chairman of Apapa Local Government, Hon. Idowu Adejumoke Senbanjo, lauded the Navy’s initiative and called on other government agencies and private stakeholders to emulate such proactive engagement in community development.

During the exercise, participants cleared blocked drainage channels, removed accumulated refuse, and sensitized local residents and traders on responsible waste disposal practices. The event fostered stronger ties between security agencies and civilian communities while advancing public health awareness.

The sanitation drive underscores the growing role of inter-agency collaboration in promoting environmental responsibility and sets a model for future initiatives geared towards a cleaner and safer Lagos.
