Recent media reports, particularly on social media, have stirred speculation regarding the operational and administrative activities of the Nigerian Army (NA). Amidst various stories, some of which are unfounded and others seen as mischief aimed at inciting panic, concerns have been raised about personnel postings, promotions, and training activities in light of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja’s official leave.

Addressing these concerns, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, clarified that there is no leadership vacuum within the Nigerian Army. He stated that the Army operates under a well-structured framework with established protocols to manage such circumstances. Before going on leave, necessary arrangements were made for Major General Abdulsalami Bagudu Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), to oversee operations in Lagbaja’s absence. This protocol is consistent with past practices where service chiefs have also taken extended leaves, with designated officials effectively managing operations during their absence.

In line with its 2024 Forecast of Events, the Nigerian Army recently conducted the Captain-Major Practical Promotion Examination in Akure. Major General Kevin Aligbe, Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command, announced the results following authorization from Major General Ibrahim. Furthermore, the Master Warrant Officer to Army Warrant Officer Promotion Exercise is currently underway in Jos, following a similar exercise conducted in Kaduna. The Army anticipates releasing results for these promotions shortly after completing final reconciliations between the relevant Corps and the Army Headquarters Department of Personnel Management.

Nwachukwu emphasized that the COAS’s absence has not led to delays in promotions or postings, as these responsibilities are managed routinely by appropriate departmental chiefs, consistent with the COAS Command Philosophy. The Army Headquarters reassured the public of its continued commitment to national security, stating that all operational and administrative activities are proceeding smoothly.

The Army also expressed gratitude to Nigerians who have shown concern for Lt Gen Lagbaja, thanking them for their prayers and support. The leadership remains steadfast in its operations, ensuring readiness to address any security challenges facing the nation.

In conclusion, the Army urged the public to maintain confidence in its operations, assuring that Major General Ibrahim is effectively managing the service until the COAS returns.
