The Commander of the Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps (NAOC), Major General JO Ugwuoke, has inaugurated a newly constructed Soldiers’ Transit Accommodation at the Headquarters of the Corps in Abalti Barracks, Surulere, Lagos. The commissioning ceremony, held on January 16, 2025, marked the culmination of efforts to alleviate the challenges faced by soldiers commuting to and from the Headquarters.
In his address, Major General Ugwuoke highlighted the difficulties soldiers encounter daily due to Lagos traffic, which often results in late arrivals to work, fatigue, and extended travel hours. He noted that soldiers posted to the Headquarters but yet to secure permanent accommodation in Lagos resorted to temporary stays in the Motor Transport Yard, further compounding their stress.
“The conceptualization of this project stemmed from these challenges and aligns with the Chief of Army Staff’s philosophy: ‘To Consolidate the Transformation of the Nigerian Army Towards Bequeathing a Well-motivated and Combat-ready Force that can Effectively Discharge its Constitutional Responsibilities,’” he said.
The facility, completed in a record time of six months, is designed to enhance soldiers’ welfare and productivity by providing convenient and stress-free accommodation close to their place of duty.
Major General Ugwuoke expressed his gratitude to the late Lieutenant General TA Lagbaja for approving and releasing funds for the project and requested a moment of silence in his honor. He also commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General OO Oluyede, for his strategic guidance and approval of the project’s commissioning.
“We pledge the unalloyed loyalty and dedication of officers and men of the Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps in the discharge of our constitutional responsibilities,” he affirmed.
Addressing the soldiers, Major General Ugwuoke emphasized the importance of proper use and maintenance of the new accommodation. He urged occupants to uphold accountability for all facilities, reflecting the Corps’ commitment to efficiency and professionalism in materiel management.
“To have a Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps that is inspired, innovative, and efficient in materiel management remains a key objective of my command,” he stated.
The event was graced by senior military officers, including the Special Guest of Honour, Lieutenant General OO Oluyede, represented by Major General GO Adesina, Corps Commander of Signals, along with other distinguished guests.
The commissioning of the Soldiers’ Transit Accommodation is expected to significantly improve the welfare and operational efficiency of soldiers stationed at the Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps Headquarters in Lagos.
