In a press briefing recently, the Nigerian Army responded to allegations of sexual harassment made by Ex-Private Ruth Ogunleye against Colonel IB Abdulkareem of the Nigerian Army Medical Corps. The Army has condemned the ongoing online campaign against Colonel Abdulkareem, describing it as a baseless defamation effort primarily taking place on social media platforms, including TikTok.

According to Army spokesperson, the Nigerian Army is a professional institution committed to discipline, integrity, and upholding the rights of individuals, stressing that all accusations against personnel are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.

The case involving Ex-Private Ogunleye, who claimed that Colonel Abdulkareem sexually harassed her during her time as a subordinate in the Nigerian Army Medical Corps Headquarters, was immediately referred to the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police for investigation. Following a comprehensive review of testimonies and evidence, the investigation concluded that there was no truth to the allegations made by Ogunleye. Colonel Abdulkareem, known for his strict discipline and professionalism, was cleared of any wrongdoing.

In the briefing, the Army disclosed that Ogunleye had been recommended for discharge on medical grounds since 2022, but efforts were made to provide her with the best available treatment before her eventual discharge. During this period, concerns over her worsening mental health led to her referral for medical evaluation, which confirmed her vulnerability due to a medical condition.

Despite the Army’s leniency, including her discharge with a 50% disability pension and other benefits, Ogunleye reportedly continued to defame Colonel Abdulkareem and other officers. The Army expressed dismay at her use of social media platforms to spread false narratives, accusing her of cyberbullying to attract attention.

While the Nigerian Army emphasized its compassion for Ogunleye’s medical condition, it strongly rejected the ongoing defamation of its officers, cautioning the public against believing the baseless accusations. The Army reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its personnel from unfounded attacks and reiterated its dedication to professionalism, discipline, and transparency in handling such matters.

The Army concluded the briefing by warning that any further defamatory behavior would not be tolerated, asserting its role as a responsible institution committed to justice and the well-being of both current and former personnel.
