In response to the recent killing of five personnel at a checkpoint in Abia, troops conducted several intelligence-based operations. These operations led to the discovery and destruction of numerous IPOB/ESN terrorist camps, including a significant camp in Igboro Forest, Arochukwu LGA of Abia State. Several arrests were made during these raids, and those detained are providing valuable intelligence to locate other terrorist camps, sleeper cells, and high-profile individuals involved in terrorist activities.
During the week under review, troops neutralized 197 terrorists and arrested 310 individuals. Additionally, 22 perpetrators of oil theft were apprehended, and 251 kidnapped hostages were rescued. In the South-South region, troops thwarted oil theft worth an estimated ₦765,654,100.
The armed forces also recovered a significant cache of weapons and ammunition, including:
– 180 assorted weapons, such as PKT guns, AK47 rifles, and locally fabricated guns.
– 5,123 assorted ammunition, including rounds of 7.62mm special and NATO ammunition, hand grenades, and mortar bombs.
Other items recovered included 47 motorcycles, 21 mobile phones, ₦1,236,200, and CFA 608,000, among various other items. Addressing recent allegations made by the Zamfara State Governor, the Defence Headquarters reiterated its commitment to professionalism and subservience to political authority. The military expressed its willingness to engage constructively with the state government to address any concerns.
The press release also acknowledged the sacrifices made by troops in Zamfara State, where nine personnel have been lost in June 2024 alone. Major General Buba stressed the importance of community support in the fight against terrorism, noting that winning the war without the backing of the local population is nearly impossible.
The Nigerian Armed Forces remain dedicated to restoring safety and security across the nation. Citizens are urged to understand the reasons behind the military’s efforts and to support the fight against terrorism, which relies heavily on the lifeline provided by the people.
