On August 5, 2024, Nigerian security, defense, and response agencies held a joint press briefing to provide updates on their recent efforts to combat criminal activities across the nation. The Strategic Communications Interagency Policy Committee, under which the briefing was held, emphasized the importance of addressing the unusual threats of protests that have characterized the past weeks.

The agencies noted that while the right to protest is constitutionally guaranteed and a cornerstone of democratic governance in Nigeria, intelligence and security agencies had uncovered plans by subversive groups and vandals to hijack these protests. Despite engagement with traditional and religious leaders, youth groups, members of civil society, and leaders of thought, these plans proceeded, resulting in the destruction of properties across multiple states. Nonetheless, security personnel demonstrated resilience and dedication in restoring order to affected areas.

In the last month, significant successes have been recorded by various agencies against criminal elements. The Nigerian Armed Forces, under the leadership of the Defense Headquarters, neutralized 572 terrorists, arrested 790 suspects, and rescued 479 kidnapped hostages. They also recovered 440 weapons and 10,589 rounds of ammunition, thwarting oil theft worth over N3 billion. Recovered items included 232 AK47 rifles, 93 locally fabricated guns, 82 dane guns, 32 pump-action guns, and thousands of rounds of ammunition. Additionally, they intercepted millions of liters of stolen crude oil and other illegally refined products, showcasing their commitment to national security.

Operation DELTA SANITY, extended for another 90 days starting July 10, 2024, also achieved remarkable successes. Highlights include the rescue of eight human trafficking victims in Badagry, foiling a sea robbery attempt in Ibaka, and dismantling illegal oil bunkering facilities in Rivers State. Arrests and seizures were made in various operations, demonstrating effective maritime security measures.

The Department of State Services (DSS) reported heightened intelligence-gathering efforts, leading to numerous arrests and disruptions of criminal networks involved in oil theft, kidnapping, armed robbery, and terrorism. The DSS recovered various weapons, ammunition, and incendiary items, and also stepped up efforts against fake news and disinformation. Significant operations led to the recovery of economic palliatives and the apprehension of saboteurs.

The Nigerian Police Force also reported significant achievements. In Plateau State, operatives dismantled a notorious syndicate involved in the theft and robbery of motorcycles and tricycles. In Taraba State, a six-man kidnapping syndicate was apprehended, and a notorious kidnapper was arrested with a cache of weapons. The Nigeria Police Force National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC) tackled a massive financial fraud case, recovering over N3.9 billion in cash, properties, and vehicles. Additionally, operatives thwarted a kidnapping gang in Lagos State, neutralizing nine kidnappers and recovering significant weaponry. The IGP Special Task Force on Petroleum and Illegal Bunkering (IGP-STFPIB) disrupted illegal petroleum activities, seizing large quantities of crude oil and refined products.

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) made strides in protecting critical assets and infrastructure. Over 70 suspects were apprehended for illegal bunkering and pipeline vandalization, with numerous illegal refineries dismantled and adulterated products seized. The NSCDC also addressed cases of armored cable vandalism, illegal mining, and rail track vandalization, with significant arrests and convictions.

These coordinated efforts by Nigerian security, defense, and response agencies underscore their commitment to combating criminal activities and ensuring national security. The agencies continue to work tirelessly to maintain peace and order across the country.
