The Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy has taken a significant step toward transforming Nigeria’s maritime sector with the validation of the National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy. The policy, described as inclusive and forward-thinking, aims to position the sector as a cornerstone of national prosperity while aligning with Africa’s Agenda 2063.

Speaking during the Second and Final Executive Technical Validation Workshop held at the Abuja Continental Hotel, the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, H.E. Adegboyega Oyetola, emphasized the importance of a strong policy framework to advance the sector. He noted that the series of workshops and engagements over the past months have been focused on producing a robust blueprint for maritime governance and development.

Oyetola highlighted the vital role of the maritime sector in Nigeria’s economic future and stressed the need for policies that integrate the marine and blue economy with economic growth. He asserted that the policy will position Nigeria as a global leader in the blue economy while driving sustainable development.

“This engagement aims to restore our priorities and solidify a framework for advancing the maritime sector over the next few years. A key factor in driving maritime development is the establishment of a strong policy framework,” Oyetola said.

The workshop brought together professionals, industry experts, academics, and researchers, underscoring the Ministry’s commitment to inclusive and expert-driven policy development.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Oloruntola Olufemi, lauded the workshop as a platform to consolidate previous achievements and finalize a comprehensive framework for sustainable growth in the blue economy. He noted the increasing global relevance of the marine industry and Nigeria’s potential to harness its vast resources for economic transformation.

“This policy represents a forward-thinking approach to harnessing the immense potential of our blue economy as we face the challenges and opportunities ahead,” Olufemi said.
