The Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s intention to seek election into Category “C” of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, during his address at the 2024 World Maritime Day parallel event in Barcelona. Nigeria’s candidacy reflects the country’s growing influence in the global maritime sector and its commitment to adhering to international standards.
Oyetola highlighted Nigeria’s progress in enhancing its maritime industry by aligning with global best practices. “Our active participation in upholding key conventions, such as the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, demonstrates our dedication to international shipping safety,” he remarked. Notably, Nigeria has seen no incidents of piracy in the last three years, as confirmed by the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), underscoring its pivotal role in ensuring security in the Gulf of Guinea.
In addition to maritime security, Oyetola emphasized Nigeria’s potential as a valuable manpower source for the maritime industry, encouraging international partners to explore collaboration opportunities. He also highlighted the nation’s Maritime Academy, which is well-equipped to support the training and development of maritime professionals.
Dr. Dayo Mobereola, the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), echoed the Minister’s commitment, stating that NIMASA is fully engaged in addressing gaps identified in previous IMO audits. “We have begun working on all identified areas and initiated communication with other member states using the IMO GSIS platform. Our Ministry will provide the political backing to ensure Nigeria’s success in securing a seat on the Council,” Mobereola said.
Oyetola’s working tour included strategic meetings with IMO Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez and other international diplomats, aimed at furthering Nigeria’s bid. He was accompanied by key stakeholders from Nigeria’s maritime sector, including NIMASA Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola; the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho; and other senior officials.
The 2024 World Maritime Day event, themed “Navigating the Future: Safety First”, brought together maritime leaders to discuss emerging challenges and opportunities, emphasizing the importance of safety in the global maritime industry.
