The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has taken a decisive step towards enhancing the skills and professionalism of its officers with the approval of a revised training curriculum for new recruits. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun announced the curriculum update as part of his commitment to fostering a modern, community-oriented police force capable of meeting the complex demands of policing in Nigeria.
The revised curriculum introduces a broad range of contemporary topics, including essential legal frameworks like the Police Act 2020, the Cybercrime Act 2015, and the Electoral Act 2022, ensuring that recruits are thoroughly prepared for lawful and ethical operations. Trainees will also receive instruction in computer studies, artificial intelligence, public relations, and public speaking, alongside specialized courses on harassment, gender-based crimes, and anti-corruption laws.
Notably, the curriculum includes training on gender mainstreaming, sex education, and the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act, reflecting the NPF’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and the protection of vulnerable groups. Additional training will cover social media policy to guide recruits on responsible online conduct, map reading, combat tactics, and behavioral changes to enhance public engagement.
IGP Egbetokun emphasized that the updated curriculum aligns with international best practices and aims to build a capable police force that can interact effectively with communities. He stated that by addressing critical training needs, the new curriculum would enhance the operational readiness, legal knowledge, and public relations skills of the new recruits.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to ongoing professional development and capacity-building efforts to empower officers in collaboration with stakeholders, aiming to build a safer and more peaceful society for all citizens.
