The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, showcased the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to environmental sustainability through the Nigeria Police Green Initiatives (NPGI) during a notable address at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai.
The core essence of the NPGI, encapsulated in the motto “Saving People with Environment,” signifies the Police Force’s dedication to confronting environmental issues and promoting sustainable practices.
IGP Egbetokun emphasized the pivotal role of law enforcement in fostering a safer and more sustainable future, urging collective action to combat climate challenges. A highlight of the Force’s contributions included active participation in energy transition initiatives, including tree planting across all Police commands and the adoption of gas-powered patrol vans to reduce environmental impact.
In an effort to propel sustainable development, the IGP announced the Force’s strategic plans to advocate for renewable energy, illuminating communities and police stations. This initiative aims to create well-lit and secure environments, contributing to reduced crime rates and community advancement.
Distinguished personalities at the event included the Executive Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umar Bago; Senior Special Assistant on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), Adefoluke Adefolure, and the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Khalil Suleiman Halilu.
IGP Egbetokun appealed for sustained support and collaboration from stakeholders, governments, and communities to collectively address environmental challenges and drive sustainable initiatives in Nigeria.
