In a proactive move aimed at fortifying national security and mitigating criminal activities linked to the misuse of tinted glass, the Nigeria Police Force has conducted a comprehensive review of the issuance of tinted glass permits. This reconsideration comes after the ban on tinted glass permits in June 2022, which was implemented due to concerns about their involvement in various heinous crimes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, illegal firearm transportation, and human trafficking.
With the impending lifting of the ban, the Nigeria Police Force is implementing stringent measures to prevent abuse and ensure strict compliance with the guidelines governing the issuance and use of tinted glass permits. As a precursor to reopening the permit issuance process, ICT Analysts and Enforcement Officers nationwide are set to undergo a thorough training session scheduled for February 29, 2024.
The training aims to equip these officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to regulate the registration process, guide registrants on the use of the online portal, address public complaints, and enforce compliance effectively. Emphasis will be placed on the intricacies of the new guidelines, striking a delicate balance between public safety, individual freedoms, and national security.
The proposed tinted glass permit will feature distinctive elements to enhance enforcement efficiency and security. These include a QR code linked to a central database for real-time verification, unique serial numbers correlated with vehicle and owner details, and a digital hologram ensuring authenticity and integrity.
Crucially, the guidelines for issuing tinted permits and the use of tinted glass will strictly adhere to the provisions of the MOTOR VEHICLES (PROHIBITION OF TINTED GLASS) ACT 1991 and other relevant laws. This strategic approach underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to prioritizing public safety while upholding individual rights and national security interests.
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force will provide regular updates to the public on the implementation of the reviewed tinted glass permit issuance process. This commitment reflects the force’s dedication to transparency and accountability in maintaining internal security.
