The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed a recent report from Ecos Intelligence titled “Nigeria Police Force Face Funding Scandal: N15,000 Allocation for 3 Months Sparks Corruption Concerns”, labeling the publication as false and misleading. In a statement released on October 25, the NPF condemned the allegations, asserting that they are based on inaccuracies and are part of a deliberate attempt to tarnish the reputation of the Force.
The report claimed that police divisions operate on minimal funds and rely on unofficial sources, including bail payments, to meet their operational needs. The NPF clarified that Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) receive statutory funding through allocations from federal resources, supplemented by state government support. Any suggestions that officers are forced to depend solely on unofficial funds are “not only false but a calculated attempt to discredit the police authority,” the statement read.
Inspector-General of Police Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has ordered a thorough investigation into the source of the report to determine any individuals responsible for spreading misinformation. While the NPF acknowledged challenges with funding in the past, it noted improvements under the current administration, highlighting ongoing commitments to further bolster police operations and effectiveness.
The NPF stressed its commitment to transparency and warned against malicious attempts to undermine its progress and cast doubt on the dedication of officers. The Force reiterated that it will not tolerate any attempts to malign its institution or cast unwarranted suspicion on its efforts to ensure national security.
