Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing maritime cooperation with The Gambia as part of efforts to bolster regional security and economic growth. The Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, made this declaration at the Fourth Blue Economy Conference in Banjul, The Gambia.
Representing the Minister at the event, the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, emphasized Nigeria’s resolve to extend its maritime security infrastructure beyond its territorial waters. He noted that discussions are underway to expand the operational coverage of the Deep Blue Project within the Gulf of Guinea to address rising security concerns.
“Nigeria remains committed to being a stabilizing force, fostering cooperation, and promoting sustainable development through the blue economy. Given the recent global trade disruptions caused by the crisis in the Suez Canal, shipping traffic around Africa has surged. To ensure maritime security, Nigeria is working towards extending the operational reach of its Deep Blue assets,” Dr. Mobereola stated.
Beyond security, Dr. Mobereola urged delegates at the conference to support Nigeria’s bid for re-election to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council (Category ‘C’) for the 2026-2027 term.
“Nigeria has formally declared its candidacy for the IMO Council election under Category ‘C’ for the 2026-2027 biennium. We seek the support of member states of the Maritime Organization of West and Central Africa (MOWCA) in the upcoming election at the 34th IMO Assembly Session. Our representation will strengthen Africa’s voice in global maritime policymaking, particularly in areas of blue economy, maritime safety, and environmental sustainability,” he added.
Dr. Mobereola also highlighted that Nigeria’s maritime security efforts have gained global recognition, with both the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) and the IMO commending the country for its effective deployment of the Deep Blue Project. Notably, Nigeria has recorded zero piracy incidents in its waters for the past three years.
Nigeria remains dedicated to fostering strategic partnerships, strengthening maritime security, and advancing the economic interests of West and Central African nations through sustainable blue economy initiatives.
