In a move to strengthen its communication strategy and adapt to evolving media trends, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), in partnership with Youth Digest, has concluded a three-day hybrid training workshop on New Media and Strategic Communication. The capacity-building session, which ran from May 7 to 9, 2025, was held at the NCS Headquarters in Abuja.
The workshop brought together Command Public Relations Officers, personnel from the PR Unit, reporters, and editors. It focused on equipping participants with skills in digital engagement, media innovation, content creation, and strategic communication to bolster the Service’s public image and outreach capabilities.
Participants benefited from interactive sessions on house style development, editorial workflows, inclusive language, visual storytelling, design principles, and an overview of media law. These sessions were facilitated by seasoned experts in journalism, strategic communications, and digital media.
Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, Assistant Comptroller-General Isah Umar underscored the critical role of effective communication in the ongoing modernisation of the Service.
“Today marks a key step in the development of officers charged with promoting the Nigeria Customs Service,” ACG Umar stated. “Capacity building is essential. I urge our younger officers to learn from the expertise of the professionals gathered here.”
Also speaking at the workshop, Assistant Comptroller and National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, stressed the importance of continuous professional development. “This training is vital. Knowledge is endless, and we must seize every opportunity to grow,” he said. “What we’ve learned here can greatly enhance our professional effectiveness.”
The workshop wrapped up with a certificate presentation ceremony to honour participants’ dedication to enhancing their skills and contributing to the growth of the Service’s communications function.
The event reflects the Nigeria Customs Service’s broader commitment to modernising its operations and engaging more effectively with the public through strategic and digitally-driven communication.
