The Tin-Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) announced a significant revenue generation of N986.3 billion between January and October 22, 2024. This remarkable figure marks a substantial increase compared to the total revenue of N716.4 billion collected in the entire year of 2023.
Customs Controller Comptroller Dera Nnadi mni disclosed these figures during a courtesy visit from the executive members of the League of Maritime Editors (LOME). He emphasized that the current revenue collection has already surpassed last year’s total by N476 billion, despite the year not yet concluding.
In addition to revenue generation, Nnadi reported substantial progress in anti-smuggling efforts, noting that the duty paid value of various seizures during the period was N4.5 billion. This achievement represents a significant increase compared to the N1.51 billion worth of seized items collected during the same period in 2023, indicating an improvement of N3.4 billion.
Nnadi commended the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, for providing vital support and motivation to the officers of the Command, contributing to their impressive performance. He also recognized the dedication of his team and the compliance of stakeholders who diligently paid their duties, facilitating this milestone achievement.
“The federal government relies heavily on the revenue generated by the Customs to fulfill obligations to Nigerians, and we take pride in contributing to this objective,” Nnadi stated. He added that the Command remains committed to collaborating with traditional stakeholders, aligning with the strategic pillars of collaboration, consolidation, and innovation as envisioned by the CGC.
In a bid to inspire and motivate his officers, Nnadi revealed that the Command adopts a new motivational slogan every week, with this week’s slogan being “reform or regret.”
During her remarks, LOME President Mrs. Remi Itie congratulated the Customs Command for its achievements in revenue generation and anti-smuggling initiatives. She expressed her confidence in Nnadi’s capabilities, recalling his impressive track record at the Seme Border. Itie assured that members of the League would continue to support the leadership of the Customs, Adeniyi, and the entire Customs management in their national assignments across seaports, airports, and border stations.
The positive outlook for the Tin Can Island Port Command’s performance suggests a continued upward trend in revenue generation and operational effectiveness as the year progresses.
