A video has gone viral on social media, depicting a confrontation between officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) at the AYA Roundabout, Abuja VIO Office. The incident, which occurred on Friday, May 24, 2024, involved NCS personnel from the Customs Mechanical Unit in Karu Barracks, Abuja.

In a press statement released on May 28, 2024, the NCS expressed deep concern and empathy for those affected by the altercation. The service unequivocally dissociated itself from the actions of the involved officers, describing their behavior as self-motivated and contrary to the values and operational standards of the NCS.

“The incident contradicts the key policy thrusts of the Comptroller-General of Customs, which include fostering collaboration with sister security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians and their properties,” the statement read.

Under the leadership of Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, the NCS condemned the conduct, emphasizing that such actions would not be tolerated. The service assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway and appropriate disciplinary measures will be implemented to prevent future occurrences.

The NCS reiterated its commitment to professionalism, inter-agency cooperation, revenue generation, trade facilitation, and the suppression of smuggling to support Nigeria’s economy.

Abdullahi Maiwada, the Chief Superintendent of Customs and National Public Relations Officer, signed the statement on behalf of the Comptroller General of Customs.
