Nestlé Nigeria has unveiled a dairy demonstration farm in Paikon Kore as part of its Nestlé Nigeria Livestock Development Project (NLDP), reinforcing its commitment to advancing the local dairy sector. The initiative, supported by the Federal Capital Territory Administration and implemented in collaboration with CBI Innovations Limited (CBiIL) and 2Scale, aims to enhance milk production, improve cattle feed, and build resilient dairy farming communities.
The new facility serves as a model for best dairy practices, demonstrating methods to boost milk yields from the local breed’s average of 1 liter per cow per day to over 10 liters through improved breeding and feeding techniques. It also integrates modern infrastructure to enhance herd health and optimize dairy production.
Speaking at the launch, Nestlé Nigeria’s Managing Director and CEO, Wassim Elhusseini, highlighted the company’s investment of over ₦1.8 billion in dairy development since 2019. He noted that pastoralists participating in the NLDP have experienced a significant increase in household income, rising from ₦70,000 in 2021 to ₦250,000 in 2024. Daily milk collection has also surged from 200 liters in June 2021 to an average of 6,000 liters per day, with over 1 million liters of raw milk aggregated so far.
CBiIL CEO, Soji Apampa, described the project as a catalyst for sustainable farming, emphasizing its role in environmental protection, animal welfare, and community development. “We envision this farm as a model of excellence, setting a benchmark for the industry and fostering innovation, quality, and sustainability,” he said.
In his remarks, the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, praised Nestlé’s contribution to Nigeria’s backward integration goals. “This project aligns with our national agenda for livestock development, reducing reliance on imports and strengthening the economy through modern dairy farming practices,” he stated.
Local community members expressed enthusiasm for the farm’s potential benefits. Speaking on behalf of the Apex Union Leaders, Sulaiman Ahmed noted that the facility would provide access to improved cattle breeds, training in modern dairy practices, and increased visibility for their community, attracting investors and business partners.
Nestlé’s 4-hectare demonstration farm features essential dairy infrastructure, including cattle sheds, a calf pen, a maternity and sick bay, an automated milking system, and a hay barn. It incorporates sustainable energy solutions such as solar power and a biogas system for waste management. The farm will also serve as a training center for dairy farmers, industry practitioners, and academics.
This initiative aligns with Nestlé’s Creating Shared Value (CSV) strategy, which fosters partnerships that benefit both society and business. Through this investment, Nestlé Nigeria continues to drive local dairy development, economic empowerment, and food security in Nigeria.
