NEC Calls On States To Embrace NASENI’s Technological Innovations

The National Economic Council (NEC) has called on state governments to adopt and support technological innovations developed by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) to fast-track Nigeria’s industrialization.

This directive was made during the 146th NEC meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The meeting featured a presentation by the Executive Vice Chairman of NASENI, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, who outlined the agency’s strategic roadmap for driving Nigeria’s industrial growth.

In his presentation, titled “NASENI Economic Transformation Through Advancement in Technology Transfer and Adaptation,” Halilu highlighted NASENI’s focus on critical sectors, including renewable energy, health and biotechnology, agriculture, digital technology, transportation, construction, and defense. He detailed the agency’s ongoing innovations, such as electric vehicles, solar home systems, smart devices, solar irrigation pumps, and coal-based fertilizers aimed at improving rural electrification and agricultural productivity.

Mr. Halilu emphasized NASENI’s mission to transform Nigeria into a global innovation powerhouse through technology transfer and product commercialization. He revealed that the agency had attracted $3.23 billion in investments and launched initiatives such as the DELT-Her program to support female engineers and renewable energy projects.

He also sought NEC’s support to establish manufacturing industries across states, access local raw materials, streamline land and seaport processes, and create showrooms for NASENI products. Additionally, the agency requested favorable policies to promote its activities and partnerships to enhance public sector market access.

The Council commended NASENI for its contributions to local manufacturing and industrial development. It directed the agency to scale up the establishment of lithium battery factories in resource-rich regions and repair tractors under the National Asset Restoration Programme. Furthermore, the NEC resolved to harness NASENI’s support for manufacturing and public sector partnerships to strengthen infrastructure, policy frameworks, and market access critical for economic diversification.

Vice President Kashim Shettima reiterated the importance of leveraging NASENI’s innovations to unlock Nigeria’s industrial potential and diversify the economy. Halilu reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to collaborating with states and the private sector to drive sustainable development and industrial innovation.

The NEC meeting marked another milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward industrial growth, with NASENI positioned as a pivotal institution in achieving the country’s technological and economic aspirations.
